Setting clear daily and weekly learning goals is a foundational strategy for excelling in online learning, as it provides a clear direction, enhances focus, and effectively drives progress. Without specific goals, learners are prone to feeling aimless, leading to inefficient use of study time and difficulty tracking their learning achievements.

When formulating goals, it’s advisable to follow the SMART principle: Specific (clear and unambiguous), Measurable (quantifiable to track progress), Achievable (within one’s current ability range), Relevant (aligned with long-term learning objectives such as HSK preparation or daily communication improvement), and Time-bound (with clear deadlines). Taking international Chinese learning scenarios as examples, instead of a vague goal like "learn Chinese," goals can be refined based on different learning needs:

1. HSK Preparation Scenario: For learners targeting HSK 4, a weekly goal could be "Master 50 high-frequency HSK 4 vocabulary related to 'daily life' and 'work' by Sunday, complete 2 listening practice sessions of HSK 4 real questions, and finish 1 set of reading comprehension exercises." Corresponding daily sub-goals might be "Memorize 10 new HSK 4 words and review the previous day’s vocabulary with word cards for 15 minutes every morning; spend 20 minutes in the evening practicing 1 listening section and checking the answers with explanations."

2. Daily Communication Scenario: For learners aiming to improve oral expression, a weekly goal could be "Master 3 situational dialogue frameworks (greeting & self-introduction, asking for directions, ordering food in restaurants) by Saturday and be able to conduct 2-minute oral retellings for each scenario."
